Aeneas is told by the Sibyl of Cumae that the only way he may gain passage to the underworld to speak to his father Anchises is to find a golden bough growing in the forest. With the help of two doves sent from his mother Venus, Aeneas finds the bough and descends to the underworld, ferried across the river Acheron by the boatman Charon.
